Pronominalization, de-pronominalization and pronominal duplication in Equatoguinean Spanish

The omission and duplication of unstressed pronouns in reflexive and pronominal structures, as well as the pronominalization of non-reflexive and non-pronominal structures, are phenomena documented in the specialized bibliography on the Spanish in Equatorial Guinea (Lipski, 1990; Quilis y Casado-Fresnillo, 1995; Bibang Oyee, 2002 y 2009; Nistal, 2009; among others). However, these descriptions are based on unsystematically gathered data that was collected several decades ago and, in the majority of the cases, only mention the linguistic structures without offering further analysis. The current corpus, collected in different regions of Equatorial Guinea at the beginning of 2022, shows that the three pronominal phenomena are still being used in Equatoguinean Spanish, but their absolute frequency and their sociolinguistic diffusion are clearly limited.
