The article reconstructs the story behind the book, the second Inventario by Antonio de Villegas (Medina del Campo, 1577), a curious anthology, which includes various poetic texts, together with the most highly thought of version of the Abencerraje by modern day critics. In the course of the research for this article, many unedited documents were used which enable the reader to gain an unusual and detailed insight into the exact nature of the editorial project, including the complex relationship between publisher and writer to define the project. As an appendix, the work includes the transcription of the agreement, signed in the presence of a notary by Antonio de Villegas and Jerónimo de Millis, in which the conditions of sale of the publication rights of the work are outlined.
