A new and fragmentary version of the Spanish romance «Muerto yaze Durandarte» in a probatio calami

The first two sixteen-syllable verses in «Muerto yaze Durandarte» were copied in a sixteenh-century codex, currently extant in the Biblioteca Nacional, by a not very laty hand. Thus, we know a new and fragmentary version of a Spanish romance which was a great success in the sixteenth century (much evidence of which still survives). The motif of the «green beech», which appears some time later, cannot be found in this probatio calami: the person who writes the verses brings back from memory a text he knows from oral tradition and turns out to be closer to the primitive version, which was alien to that motif.
