This article studies the episode of Ulysses’ death at the hands of his son Telegonus (General estoria, Part III) by means of a systematic comparison of the Alphonsine passage with the Roman de Troie in order to determine the nature of the Castilian compilation’s version of the French original. The passage displays substantial changes when compared to its model: these innovations transform Ulysses’ attitude towards his sons, soften Telemachus’ imprisonment and emphasize the pardoning of Telegonus. The article relates this chapter to the historical conflicts between Alphonse X and Sancho.
