Patronage or debt in the printing work of Diego de Gumiel

A document of 1509 in which the name Diego de Gumiel appears in relation to that of Alonso Carrillo de Caracena (Acuña) suggests some links between the works printed in Valladolid by Gumiel and the will of an important family to which he was in debt. In the light of this information, it seems that the printer’s bankruptcy may not have been solely caused by professional errors. Some of his more significant titles might, moreover, have borne some relation to the historical fortunes of the Carrillo family.
