The aim of this paper is to analyze the evolution of both Spanish and Romance prose as a modular process where the innovations are superimposed. One such innovation concerns the «nominalization» of prose, to wit, the rise of sequences in which the chaining of comment-driven sentences is replaced by the chaining of topic-driven sentences. The main example of nominalization and one which has a founding role is el cual. In order to understand both its introduction and its extension in romance languages, I distinguish two different structures for this item: the adjective sentence and the topical sentence, and I suggest that the latter structure rather than the former is the source of the innovation. Other items like el dicho, semejante and tal incorporate the same process.
