If we are to recover the original text, the need to recognize and accept «latent» variants in the handling of the two codices PO is demonstrated. In order to compare the ecdotic efforts of the three editores —Cañas, Marcos Marín and Nelson— the author makes a detailed analysis of fifty strophes contained in the description of Hell and the treatise on the Deadly Sins (2334-2383). He uses eight objective and pratical criteria to discriminate variants accurately: orthography, prefixation, scansion, lexical selectivity, cultural traditions, scribal proclivities, asynchronism, and contextual meaning. The article concludes with an example of the unified text produced by the proposed procedure, which guaranties greater intratextual coherence.
