Maurophilia in don Juan Manuel’s works

In this study, I analyze two of don Juan Manuel’s important works that, to some extent, appear to be narratives written in the context of Christian doctrine. However, their representation of the Islamic world could not be more intriguing and has been debated by critics for a long time. I argue that Maurophilia, or the positive view of Muslim characters and their culture as manifested in El conde Lucanor and Libro de los estados, is undeniable. I discuss also many of the basic statements and assumptions underpinning the notion of Maurophilia in order to explore the historical place of these narratives within the context of the long Muslim presence in medieval Iberia.
