The Modal Orientation Theory: a proposal on verbal mood in noun-dependent clauses

The verbal mood in noun-dependent subordinate clauses has been studied from partial perspectives or from the argumental/appositional structural distinction. This study assumes that it is possible to explain it from the semantic-pragmatic features of the nominal matrix. Thus, it is proposed that these matrices can function as fully meaningful nouns, when they are interpretatively necessary, or as simple shells, when they are not. While the former impose the verbal mood, simple shells are combined with the main predicate. These data were endorsed by native speakers through surveys.
