Pedro IV de Aragon, Aragonese (XIVth century)Abstract
In his youth the future Pedro IV wrote to his father (from whom he was separate) in Aragonese. He continued to use Aragonese in the documentation issued in the early part of his reign, beginning with the Coronation ceremony. After, moving towards a pro-Catalan policy, he tended to use Catalan, following the practice of the royal chancellery. Yet he used Aragonese to communicate with particular subjects who had closer contacts with this language, or with kings of Castille or Castilian personages. Aragonese was also to be the language of the new constitutional texts (Fueros) of Aragon and of the parliaments of this kingdom.
