Confusiones de sibilantes en el manuscrito 20241/13 de la Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid

This article analyses the mixing of sibilants found in the folios of manuscript 20241/13 of the National Library of Madrid, which was signed in 1703 by the clergyman from Alburquerque Mr. Francisco Sánchez y Santiago, as an answer to the questionaire forwarded by Tomás López for the Spanish Geographical Dictionary. The dates of the manuscript and the place wheree it was copied makes it worthwhile examining the phonological system it reflects. This system shows all the characteristics of the Castillian spoken in the area, and contains examples of what is known in Spanish as 'seseo', probably due to the proximity of Alburquerque to Portugal. This, together with the hypercorrections which tend to avoid this phenomenon, and the amendments made on the actual manuscript, shows a strong linguistic awareness and a peculiar search for perfection.
