This paper deals with the early stages of grammaticalization of haber + participle in Old Spanish and examines the paths of development of anteriority's temporal value that characterizes haber + participle in Modem Spanish. It is claimed that this development was constrained by transitivity, aspectuality and lexical properties of the participle. Semantic change from resultative to anterior meaning was governed by transitive gradience and sprout throughout a lexical diffusion pattern which involved metaphorical transfer between semantic related domains. Contrary to current opinion, the data show that the semantic change to anteriority didn't begin in cognition and perception verbs like cognitum habeo, but in verbs of possession and acquisition, speech verbs and verbs of action used in high transitive clauses.
