Es un hecho bien sabido en la teoría de cambio lingüístico que los procesos de gramaticalización operan como un canal unidireccional que en general de manera dinámica, entre otras consecuencias, desgastan significados referenciales, más concretos, y crean o recrean significados más abstractos y más gramaticales, los cuales suelen convivir durante siglos al lado de los originarios significados etimológicos referenciales.
