This paper gives a brief history of the headword 'decocción' in Spanish Lexicography. Today, this headword covers three senses, in accordance with the last edition (2001) of the Diccionario de la Real Academia Española. These three different senses are: 1) "Acción y efecto de cocer en agua sustancias vegetales o animales"; 2) "Producto líquido que se obtiene por medio de esta decocción"; 3) "Amputación de un miembro". It then focuses on the history of the third sense 'amputación', which it is claimed to be a phantom-word, originated by a textual error due to an interference between two headwords, 'decocción' and 'decolación'.
